Opera Canada Magazine Article

The following article appeared in the Winter 2009 issue of Opera Canada Magazine.

Baritone John Fanning and mezzo Marianne Bindig, past recipients of scholarships from the Canadian Opera Volunteer Committee (COVC) were on hand to perform at the T.O.S.C.A. Opera Scholarship Celebration Awards Dec. 7, when vocal students at the University of Toronto opera school also performed and received 2009/10 annual scholarships. Also on the lineup was soprano Yannick-Muriel Noah, who won the COVC Jean A. Chalmers Award for Best Canadian Performer at the 2009 Montreal International Music Competition.

Formed in 1947, the COVC over the years awarded almost 800 scholarships and raised more than $6 million for the Canadian Opera Company. After the COC assumed some of the fundraising work undertaken by the COVC, the organization recently re-focused its mission to support vocal students and young singers in training. COVC president Arija Stiver, who spearheaded the reorientation, announced at the gala that, as a reflection of its priorities, the organization has renamed itself as ARIAS: Canadian Opera Student Development Fund.
